Duff Goldman’s career began at the age of fourteen when he started working in the kitchen, initially serving at a bagel shop in a mall. His big break came when he landed a job making biscuits and cornbread at one of Baltimore’s top restaurants, Charleston.
Duff’s career continued to rise as he worked alongside some of the most renowned chefs in California, including a prestigious stagiaire position at the French Laundry. He eventually became the executive pastry chef at the Vail Cascade Hotel in Colorado and also worked at Todd English’s Olives restaurant. In 2000, he took a significant step by founding his own business, Charm City Cakes.
Starting small, Duff sold his cakes from his home in Charles Village, Baltimore, with just two assistants. But as demand for his unique creations grew, he expanded his business and hired more employees.
Duff is known for creating some truly unusual cakes, including a 3-foot buttercream Elvis sculpture, a replica of a CAT scan machine, a smoking volcano, a jeep, an anatomically correct ear, a 3D German Shepherd, and an edible Wrigley Field.
In March 2008, he set a Guinness World Record for baking the largest cupcake, which weighed 61.4 pounds and stood a foot tall. However, his record was later disqualified when it was revealed that the cupcake had been made in two parts, as shown in an episode of Ace of Cakes in 2009.
